Gavilan employees honored with Baler STRONG recognition
by Jan Janes on Apr 2, 2021Judy Rodriguez, Gavilan College Hollister Site Director, and Stacey Stadtler-Porteur, Senior Program Outreach Specialist, were recently honored by San Benito High School (SBHS) for their work with the community.
Judy Rodriguez and Stacey Stadtler-Porteur visited their alma mater to receive
their Baler STRONG awards.
The STRONG acronym stands for Scholarship, Teamwork, Reflection, Opportunity, Nurture and Growth. Traditionally the school presents this award to students and staff members who exemplify these ideals.
The high school recently expanded its recognition of people who exhibit the Baler STRONG core values to include the community.
“We are broadening our reach to recognize individuals, businesses or agencies that support and efforts and thank them for a meaningful contribution,” said SBHS Superintendent Dr. Shawn Tennenbaum. “We are building a culture that’s thankful so we can create a healthier and more mindful culture.”
Rodriguez, who has worked for Gavilan College for the past 24 years, was noted for her warm smile and contagious personality as she guides SBHS students in their next step to Gavilan College. During the pandemic she has hosted Zoom meetings in English and Spanish for high school students to answer their questions. Students learn about the campus, majors, application steps, completing FAFSA financial aid materials and scheduling their classes.
“It is an honor for both Stacey and me, as we are both alumni, class of 1987, from San Benito High,” said Rodriguez. “I have known Stacey since elementary school. To be able to serve students alongside my longtime friend is extra special.”
Rodriguez and Stadtler-Porteur share a vision in seeing students succeed and to make a difference by helping them as they prepare to graduate from high school. The information they offer helps students make better informed decisions about their educational futures.
“I am super excited about this award,” said Stadtler-Porteur, who has worked for the college for the past 15 years. She was noted for her positive, friendly, energetic personality. During the pandemic she offers Haybaler Supports to SBHS students two to three times each month. Students receive guidance, sometimes one-on-one, about their Gavilan applications, FAFSA financial aid, scholarship opportunities and an overall introduction to Gavilan College.
“We are proud to be able to give back to this community we grew up in Baler STRONG,” said Rodriguez.
